Many concerns after new survey
The Gaul Families Association has many concerns and worries after
the recent Government survey and has issued the following statement:-
Gaul Families Association Committee Meeting
Thursday 19th September 2002 at 3.00pm
At the Max Gold Partnership Solicitors
Suggested requests after the latest survey:
1. Why was the search for human remains made the lowest priority
to the extent that, but for the crew's heroic efforts in the last
48 hours, no remains would have been found?
2. It seems as if the specialised equipment had not been properly
tested to operate at a 300 metre depth and it mostly failed. What
tests were actually carried out?
3. Having been told that the current on the wreck prevented a manned
dive is it correct that there was no discernable current on the
wreck and that other than depth consideration a manned dive would
have been possible?
4. Why was the search for the SOCUS cable not given a serious priority
and please prepare comparison video showing the position of the
cable on two earlier dives with that eventually checked on this
dive.
5. Was a search of the surrounding seabed carried out to prove or
eliminate the gas theory?
6. Please prepare an assessment showing the amount of actual operative
time and the unproductive down time on this last survey and confirm
exactly which areas of the vessel were not entered or searched.
Explanation of why explosives were not used to gain entry when proposed
methods were obviously failing.
7. A comparison should be made of the estimated working times on
the various projects and those actually achieved.
8. There should be a expert assessment of the performance of the
"special equipment" and the reasons for its failure. Please
list any areas where human remains were seen but not recovered or
investigated.
9. When will we be able to obtain access to the video footage in
its entirety.
10. Please prepare two videos, one showing remains and one without.
The videos should concentrate on bridge, radio room, mess deck,
all areas where remains were found. Also open hatches, doors, securing
devices, any holes in the outer surface and fractures to the vessel.
We would also wish to see details of the position of any controls
and settings and of the rudder and other steerage equipment. Also
the trawl doors, pulleys, winches and bridge door.
11. We assume that there will be an assessment of the effectiveness
of this dive prepared by your experts, if so, will we be supplied
with a copy of it.
12. Once this information is received we will reserve the right
to raise other enquiries and make representations as we see fit.
